While many artists were making headway into the expressionistic art form, they were greatly unaccepted by the majority of the public eye. During the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, this kind of art form was born and began taking ridicule from the experts of that time. The subject matter was unacceptable due to it being drawn from intense emotion of the artist instead of being simple still life or portraits. However, thanks to photographer Hans Namuth, some artists were recognized and the art form was accepted in a new light.

Starting out snapping shots during war and doing simple portraits, Namuth had a hankering for a certain type of photography he was not aware of until the fifties. He studied under the great Alexey Brodovitch and while doing so, came across the artist named Jackson Pollack. Pollack was a sort of modern day Van Gogh in his art style. Once Namuth saw this artist at work, he had his first taste of his career destiny.

Namuth convinced Brodovitch Pollack was well worth photographing due to his unique style of painting. When approached by the photographer about capturing him at work, Pollack agreed due greatly to the influence of his wife. This began a long term and sometimes volatile relationship between the two artists. However, no one could have known at the time how famous Pollack was going to become due to these simple photographic sessions.

Pollack painted in a drip method that was alarming to many of that time. He was thought by many to simply sling brightly colored paints in every direction for no reason, expecting everyone to accept it as something it was not. However, when photography and filming of his painting methods were made public, experts and art lovers began to see another part of Pollack never seen before. He did have focus and real direction in his drip method, only no one had ever seen it actually happening.

Because of the photos and film of Pollack, many other budding artists began to emerge into the expressionism style. Frank Stella, Mark Rothco, and Robert Rauschenberg were only a few of the artists to gain popularity due to this photographer’s great talents and friendly persistence. Readers should bear in mind many of these artists were self absorbed and did not fancy being in the public eye in any way aside from their work.

Expressionism art has come along way into the modern world of today. Without it, society would certainly be lacking an important aspect of every artist and their emotional influences in their work. Thanks to this photographer’s dedication, everyone today can appreciate the real passion behind many masterpieces.

The Jackson Pollock biography is an account of an American artist expressing himself in the abstract expressionist period after World War II. His chaotic and complex life was reflected in his work and influenced future painters.

Paul Jackson Pollock was born on January 28, 1912 in Wyoming. He and his four older brothers grew up in Iowa, Arizona, and California. After being expelled from two high schools including an art school, he and one of his brothers moved to New York City in 1930 and enrolled in the Art Students League of New York. From 1938 to 1942 he worked with other artists for the Federal Art Project creating paintings and murals.

During the early 1940s he was treated for psychological problems and alcoholism. He was encouraged to express himself through his drawings. In 1945 he married American painter Lee Krasner who helped him perfect his painting technique.

Pollock preferred using household paint, stiffened brushes, sticks, trowels, knives, and cooking basters instead of conventional supplies. Canvas would be laid flat on the floor or pinned to the wall before beginning his energetic dance-like process of dripping, pouring, and splattering paint. This was later known as action painting.

As his career soared, his most famous paintings were created from 1947 to 1950. He was also the focus of an article in Life magazine in 1949. However, he suddenly stopped his famous technique and began trying other methods in 1951 such as using only dark colors or all black before again incorporating colors into his work. He also began to number instead of title his art as a neutral way for others to view his paintings.

His alcoholism worsened as he felt the pressure that resulted from the high demand for his art. He completed his last paintings in 1955 and did not paint at all in 1956. On August 11, 1956 he crashed the car he was driving while under the influence of alcohol. He and passenger Edith Metzger, whom he had just met that morning, were killed. Edith was the friend of Pollock’s mistress Ruth Kligman who was also in the vehicle but survived the crash.

The Jackson Pollock biography has influenced future artists by showing that the process to create art is more important than focusing on the work itself. His art reflects how this creative method gives the canvas a life of its own and touches those who view it.

The number of famous and beautiful expressionist paintings in the world today became so due to the artists disagreeing with the general rules of art. Expressionism began in the late nineteenth century when many art forms were considered unacceptable simply because they did not conform or because they contained misunderstood subject matter.

Vincent van Gogh was true to expressionism. In fact, he was one of the first artists to begin painting in this whorl wind of colors. Some experts believe he painted in this style due to mental illness that ultimately took his life. For whatever reasons were backing this amazing artist in his motives, his work in the past couple years of life are a tribute to an amazing part of him that was obviously completely misunderstood.

Following on the heels of Van Gogh were other artists using the same wild concepts and vivid colors of expressionism. In the years preceding Van Gogh’s gifts to the world, painting was done in few bright colors and were about certain kinds of subject matter. Nowhere did anyone actually express solely their own emotions and thoughts. No one could have guessed how much the art world was going to change through the expressionism era.

Another artist that painted his feelings was James Ensor. In fact, he used deep feelings of isolation as his inspiration for his wonderful works. Ensor grew up spending a lot of time alone, learning about the world around him through the eyes of a budding artist. However, as he grew into that world, he became isolated through morbid thoughts about other people around him. He is famous for his ghostly art during the time of expressionism.

Expressionism touched the entire world of art. Many experts feel that because of Van Gogh’s contribution to this art form, other artists unwilling before to wield their feelings in their work began to do so. Spreading like a fever, expressionism began to surface in the early twentieth century in places like Germany, France, and Spain. Artists like Antonio Gaudi, Edward Munch, and Ernst Barlach produced work that is famous today due to their emotional and passionate depictions on canvas.

Art lovers today can display their favorite expressionist paintings at home or in the office. Many art galleries and shops sell hand painted copies that are so close to the original you will have to look closely to know it is a copy. Keep in mind these art forms are an excellent way to add emotion and passion to any area in your home or office.

The times after World War II brought about a strange chaos and calamity to many areas of the world. While the war was over, it seemed the entire globe remained in suspended animation at the horrors of it. The art world during this time greatly reflected the emotions many people were feeling. This is how the abstract expressionist movement became an intricate part in the society of art.

Artists like Jackson Pollack, Jane Frank, and Paul Klee made it is easy to see how expressionism was spreading throughout Europe and America. Critics eventually gave in to the wild and untamed style after balking at it for some time. Once the fever caught on, this form of art truly became alive. The term abstract expressionism began popping up in the descriptions from critics like Robert Coates and Alfred Barr in the early twentieth century.

Every artist has their own style, even when it comes to highly controversial drip method used by Jackson Pollack. Making the canvas speak was a talent the artists of that time used well and for allowing it tell their inner most thoughts and emotions to the world. Without the bold steps of these early expressionist artists, the world of art today may be drastically limited and different.

Even while these paintings expose the feelings of the artist, they also pull out the emotions of viewers as well. This is the greatest reason this art form became so intensely popular during the post World War II era. Millions of people everywhere were feeling the same kind of emotions and insanity depicted by each artist. Different styles of painting enticed these feelings from several cultural sects while the same thread of fright and intensity ran through them all.

By the 1950s, most renowned art critics had come to accept expressionism as a viable and real form of art. How this acceptance came about is a topic, however, of serious debate. Art galleries and critics were far and few between due to the Great Depression and the war. The critics that were active had artists they supported most of the time. Out of luck or out of the sheer exhaustion of fighting the realism of the new era, these critics helps to build a solid foundation for the abstract expressionist movement. Because of the efforts of both artists and supporting critics during the time when every detail of life seemed a struggle, the world today can appreciate the wonderful and colorful masterpieces that speak deep emotion about severe and turbulent times.

New Yorks contribution to the arts is an impressive achievement and it stems from the wide variety of venues, galleries and libraries which encourage artistic endeavours. Galleries from the Guggenheim to the Museum of Modern Art Offer new artists something to aspire to but also the inspiration offered by their predecessors. The proliferation of music venues offer musicians of every kind to display their talents and this creates the atmosphere for them to grow and forge a creative career.

Traditional and modern art vie side by side for the communities appreciation in this famous city. The abstract brilliance of Jackson Pollock paintings can be seen at the Guggenheim alongside many other modern and early modern works. This is just one example of the quantity of quality artists on display in New York. A short walk along Museum mile from the Guggenheim and it is possible to find the metropolitan museum of art, the Goethe Institute and the soon to be finished Museum for the African Arts. Even in this small part of the cities art scene there is a wide variety of styles to inspire.

Away from the traditional visible forms of art New York still has a lot to offer. There are treats a plenty for the music fan. Classical blends are interwoven with modern trends in the bars, clubs and multiple music venues that span the length and breadth of the area. There is an old joke that goes; How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice and this sums up the scene here. Carnegie Hall offers a pinnacle for aspiring bands and musicians to reach and what they need is practice. New York is just the place to do it with a venue that suits any style from classical to punk and back again.

Walking the streets can be as enthrallingly an artist journey as that of visiting one of the many venues that offer it. This is due to the magnificent mingling of old and new architecture of impressive proportions. The Guggenheim is a fine example. Designed by Frank Geary the external structure is as spectacular as the inside and for many as beautiful as the works on display within. Anyone wandering away from guidebook suggested sites can still be impressed upon by the artistic bent of the street artist. Many areas of the city offer graffiti artists a valuable canvas. Often this is commissioned as part of a regeneration project and offers yet another valve for the youths artistic styles.

Visiting or living in New York can be a dizzying experience through the artistic assault that is nurtured within the five boroughs. From Jackson Pollock paintings to the street art and architectural masterpieces the eyes have a real feast to enjoy. The music scene is vibrant with some of the biggest acts on the planet playing often but also offers the chance to discover a new gem or just an old favourite. All of these factors genuinely make New York a haven for both new and old artists.
